Restoring Montauk...Piece by Piece
Preserving Montauk...the tip of our southern shoreline...is vital to our heritage.
Second House is being meticulously restored by the Town of East Hampton to its appearance in 1886 when George A. Osborne, the last livestock keeper at Second House, and his family moved to East Hampton.
On December 22, 1881, Alice Osborne married Abraham Dayton in one of the first Euro-American weddings in Montauk. They were married at Second House, where Alice's parents, George and Florence Osborne where employed by the trustees of Montauk as livestock keepers and also innkeepers.
This image from the East Hampton Library's Long Island Collection shows the Osborne family at Second House during the 1870s.
