A Haven for Poltergeists

Updated: Nov 5, 2022

The Lakeview Cemetery in Patchogue is evidently a haven for poltergeists. Over the years there have been reports of a wandering headless ghost, an eerie apparition dressed like a priest, and unexplainable images caught on camera. The alleged spirits come from two sources: four sailors who froze to death in an 1800s shipwreck, and restless souls who died an untimely death nearby on “Blood Hill.”

Now if you look up the word courageous you won’t find my picture in the dictionary, but I felt inclined to visit the chilling site myself (okay I dragged my husband with me). I don't normally partake in spook festivities - I like to leave the paranormal well enough alone. But around Halloween I get a little caught up in the spooky occasion, and to be honest I thought it a visit would make good material for a post. Especially if I was accosted by a restless spirit.

I expected my imagination to get the best of me, and I highly doubted I would even exit the car when we arrived. But I was strangely calm, at least for a short time. I led the way, taking a deep interest in the worn out headstones and really feeling connected to history there. I actually lost myself in thought as I read each one and tried to piece families together. The dates on some, even though barely legible, marked the short lives of so many.

I took some great photos and after a few minutes we decided it was time to go. And then my rationality and level-headedness began to wane, and two thoughts entered my mind and unnerved me. First, I recently read that eager spirits can follow you home. Yikes. I truly got the heebie jeebies as I got in the passenger seat, giving a look all around to insure we didn't have unwanted company. Second, I remembered that some "unexplained" images could surface in pictures that weren't visible to the naked eye. OMG what have I done. I was definitely reluctant to scrutinize the photos I took too closely, and haven't till this day. Feel free to scour the images for anything out of the ordinary.
