Long Island - A very special place we get to call home.

Creating Magic Through Her Lens

TBT - Photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston was known for capturing the essence of beautiful spaces through her lens. The wealthy estates and gardens of Long Island’s east end and gold coast got her attention from 1913 – 1917, and her collection includes some really enchanting shots of Cold Spring Harbor’s Burrwood, Roslyn Harbor’s Willowmere, Glen Cove’s Pratt estates, East Hampton’s Grey Gardens, and others.

I was amazed these photos were in color, and then I read this article in Smithsonian: "Over her lifetime, Johnston amassed a body of work that included more than 1,100 glass lantern slide images of public and private gardens. Created at a time when color was not readily rendered from the camera, colorists painstakingly hand-painted each of her slides, known as glass lantern." Talk about tedious!

The article in Smithsonian is actually fascinating for those who are interested: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/.../frances-benjamin.../
