I’ve been waiting like a kid at Christmas for Insatiable Eats Creative Kitchen, an Italian restaurant/marketplace concept, to open in Riverhead. Whenever I pass I strain my eyes to see inside to check the progress.
This past weekend we drove by and the owner/chef, Marco Barrila, is outside talking with several people. Now to me he’s semi-famous because he’s been featured all over local media. My husband slows down and rolls down the window, and I poked him saying “What are you doing??!!”. He hushed me and yelled over to Marco “Hey there - when do you plan on opening?” Marco looks up and smiles, shouting “Come on in! Park the car! I’ll show you around.”
I look down at myself and see I am in my Sunday not-so-best, a notch higher than pajamas, but I was so excited to be getting a glimpse of this place that I zipped my jacket as high as it could go, slid my fingers through my hair, and almost fell out of the truck as I jumped out.
We were getting a private tour of Insatiable Eats by Marco himself, and before I knew it we were following him around with warm-out-of-the-oven Sicilian pizza rounds in our hands he wanted us to try. In a rich accent he vibrantly told us about the homemade pasta, freshly made sauce they also sell by the jar, on-premises Italian baker, espresso station, and the list goes on. But time seemed to stand still when he went on to explain the antipasto bar in delicious detail – seafood salad, olives and cheeses, crusty bread, red wines to pair. Now he really had my attention.
Marco then introduced us to his wife Sheila who was extremely gracious and engaging, and explained how they are working together to bring their vision of an authentic Sicilian eatery alive. Their soft beginning is set for tomorrow, December 8th, so they can work through any hiccups before the official opening on the 18th.
