August 17, 1909 – The Arlington shipwreck turned into summer blockbuster entertainment for strolling pedestrians on the Long Beach boardwalk. With a cargo of coal heading down the coast to Florida, The Arlington hit some rough seas and inadvertently careened off course. It was discovered lying about 300 yards off shore near Hotel Nassau. The ship and its contents could not be salvaged, but all of the crew was rescued. Most of the mariners were able to reach life boats through the heavy surf. Mans Pierson, however, leapt to a floating hatch cover and drifted away. The hero in his story is a dog named Sport, who sensed Pierson on the water and caused his owner to keep a sharp lookout, eventually spotting the drifting sailor. Sounds like quite the show for all of the hotel guests there that day.
