TBT - Came across this story about Roxey the Railroad dog…a cute little pup “adopted” by the Long Island railroad crew circa 1904. He became a devoted LIRR mascot for over 10 years, and staff and passengers alike took good care of him during his locomotive lifetime. Exactly how he arrived at the railroad station is unclear – several versions of that tale circulating.
But Roxey loved riding the rails back and forth across Long Island, and even got to sit in a private car with Theodore Roosevelt on one of his journeys. Roxey rests in peace at the Merrick train station, memorialized with a small headstone and water bowl.
